Regular collaborator with Fonic, Emmy award nominated filmmaker, Fx Goby, has his work Static | Motion, which he directed and Fonic provided the sound design, nominated for several awards at the La Jolla International Fashion Film Awards, the international fashion film festival, considered the Cannes of the fashion film world.
Goby is known for his use of strong storytelling both in animation and live action, and in this graceful hypnotic piece, made in collaboration with Royal College of Art MA Menswear graduate, Saul Nash, who choreographed as well as created the outfits, they capture the process by which a man is able to liberate himself and tell his true story. Capturing a dreamlike moment, where a group of men let go of their movements and embrace their sensitivities.
The film was made as part of Nash’s final Royal College of Art collection and explores the idea that grace can be found everywhere. Nash is an active hip hop dancer and the predominantly hip hop movements are performed to a classical piece Sposa son disprezzata sung by Cecilia Bartoli, demonstrating the gracefulness of this dance style. This juxtaposition continues as the dancers, who’s movements have been slowed down, perform in an urban landscape against the backdrop of a sunny blue sky which generates sharp shadows.
The aim of the sound design was to break the feeling of slow motion and create a feeling of floating bodies, making the movement feel more present. The sound was recreated from scratch to sound like the images were captured at normal speed.
Static | Motion has been nominated for four awards, including best music, they include:
- Best creative concept
- Best Music
- Best Editing
- Best Ensemble
The awards will be held on Friday 26th – Saturday 27th July. We wish Goby, Nash and all the Static | Motion team the best of luck.
