This immersive and riveting feature length psychological thriller follows veterinary student, Rose (Ann Skelly), when she decides to contact Ellen (Orla Brady), her birth mother who gave her up for adoption, to find out why she made that decision.
Rose Plays Julie received its world premiere at the 2019 BFI’s London International Film Festival as part of the Best Film Award in the Official Competition selection. The Best Film Award aims to honour inspiring, inventive and distinctive global filmmaking. The film was widely praised, receiving many positive reviews. Including reference to the sound design and mix.

Rose Plays Julie was part of the virtual Melbourne Film Festival and sold out with over 1000 tickets.
The film was also part of the virtual Galway Film Fleadh which featured an online Q+A with Desperate Optimists and the main cast.
It was also selected for the San Francisco Film Festival, Helsinki Film Festival, Dublin Film Festival, Sao Paulo Film Festival and the Wroclaw Film Festival.
