A ceramic statue in a garden sparks a journey, uncovering hidden history.

Statue in the Garden

Client | Animate Projects

Didi leaves the lush mountains of southern China for Stoke-on-Trent, the UK’s ceramics capital. Feeling far from home, she discovers a small, curious ceramic statue in her garden, an enchanting object which sparks an unexpected journey through time, helping Didi uncover and appreciate the rich heritage of her new neighbourhood.

Statue in the Garden is a film by Qianhui Yu, produced by Animate Projects, with the support of Film Hub Midlands as part of the BFI NETWORK, awarding funds from the National Lottery. Qianhui explains: “The story is based on my experiences after moving to Stoke-on-Trent, a small, British city. Through my film, I hope to inspire others to embrace empathy and to understand those who often feel like outsiders in their surroundings. It’s a narrative that shows how anyone can discover a true sense of belonging, no matter where they begin.”

Fonic provided cinematic sound design and final audio mix, delivering full audio post-production for the short film.

Qianhui Yu is an animation director and illustration artist based in Stoke-on-Trent, UK. In 2020, she directed and animated short film Wastopia, as her Royal College of Art MA Animation graduation project. She has made editorial animations and illustrations for Bloomberg Businessweek, New York Times Book Review, Penguin Randomhouse and Faber Children amongst others.
