Back to the Moon

Client | Google Doodle, Google Spotlight Stories, Google Arts & Culture, Cinémathèque Française and Nexus Studios

The Emmy-nominated Back to the Moon was a project Fonic worked on with Nexus Studios alongside directors Fx Goby and Hélène Leroux in a unique collaboration between Google Doodles, Google Spotlight Stories, Google Arts and Culture and Cinématèque Française.

This innovative and striking short was launched as the first ever virtual reality (VR) / 360 interactive Google Doodle in 2018. The film celebrates the life and work of pioneering illusionist and filmmaker Georges Méliès by transporting the viewer inside his magical world showcasing some of his best known techniques and characters. The film also features a Mathieu Alvado score recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra.

Based on its worldwide success and acclaim, the film later returned in the form of an augmented reality experience, making it the only Doodle available in VR, AR, 360 Video and 2D animation.

Fonic worked across all the variations of the film and produced assets specific to each version’s technical requirements.
