Back to the Moon
Back to the Moon is the first-ever Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and 360-degree interactive Google Doodle.
Fonic worked with Nexus Studio and Director Johnny Kelly on a two stop-frame model animation films for Mexican restaurant chain, Chipotle.
The first film, Back to the Start, created in 2011 was a story about Chipotle’s Cultivate Foundation, highlighting their drive for ethical & sustainable farming, including animal welfare. Director Johnny Kelly developed a poignant story that tracked the life of a farmer and his animals. Filmed in one sweeping take, the short was animated over four-weeks on one large all-encompassing model background and included Willie Nelson singing Coldplay’s Back to the Start.
The positive recognition the film received was immense including the 2012 Grand Prix for Film at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity and a Grand Prix for Branded Content and Entertainment as part of the Cultivate Campaign (for Best Integrated Campaign), a Gold for Animation in Film Craft, and a Silver for Viral Film in Cyber lions. Other awards included a Grandy at the Andy Awards 2012, D&AD 2012 Sliver Pencil, a Grand Clio for Film at the Clio Awards in 2012 and a People’s Voice Award at the Webby Awards 2012 and was also noted in the TED initiative ‘Ads Worth Spreading’ in 2012 .
A decade later, Kelly continue the farm’s story with A Future Begins focusing this time on human welfare.
The production was more ambitious second time round, consisting of ten different sets, featuring 82 tiny resin puppets including 12 sheep, 10 cows, 12 pigs, 10 chickens, 12 farm helpers, 10 characters on campus and 16 audience members all captured in one fluid camera move whilst depicting the change of all four seasons.
Kelly’s commitment to authenticity meant only real farming techniques used by Chipotle suppliers were depicted. This included solar panels to provide shade for animals, plots of land dedicated to rewilding and polytunnels to cover pepper crops.
The soundtrack this time was courtesy of Grammy-award winning singer, Kacey Musgraves, who, like Willie Nelson, reimagined a Coldplay classic Fix You.
A Future Begins premiered on TV to 77 million households during the Thanksgiving NFL game in 2021 between the Las Vegas Raiders and Dallas Cowboys and won an Annie Award for Sponsored film.
Fonic provided the sound design, working closely with Kelly to create an audio pallet that complimented his visual style. With A Future Begins, this took place during the summer of 2020 whilst socially distancing and was one the first projects Fonic completed entirely remotely.
