Fonic is thrilled to announce the commencement of production on the fifth series of the beloved BAFTA and Emmy award winning pre school series ‘Hey Duggee’ and brand new spin off show ‘Hey Duggee’s Squirrel Club’.
Produced by Studio AKA for the BBC and created by Grant Orchard, ‘Hey Duggee’ is a vibrant, hilarious riot of colour and sound that has captured the hearts of preschoolers and parents alike. Fonic has been integral to the show’s success, crafting the sound for every episode of the previous four series and now diving into the latest instalment. Each series, consisting of multiple seven-minute episodes, represents hours of meticulously designed soundscapes.
As the series have progressed, the number of characters and story lines has increased creating a vast Hey Duggee universe. Fonic’s sound designers are therefore regularly tasked with creating the perfect audio environment for a host of diverse situations.
The expertise Fonic has in producing audio for long running children’s animated series was a big draw for Studio AKA as Fonic know all the pitfalls that can await a successful show. Christopher Swaine highlights why a long lasting relationship with a show is extremely beneficial for it’s success. He notes: “When a series has a vast number of episodes and hours of recordings accumulated over many years, maintaining continuity of sound can be challenging. Having designed and mixed every episode of Hey Duggee, we possess extensive knowledge of its sonic landscape. We typically know immediately which audio elements correspond to each asset and have developed a workflow that allows us to expand on existing characters, objects, and places with each new story. This long-standing, close relationship with the show ensures that the ‘sound integrity’ of every episode is consistently maintained.”
This attention to detail, embedded in Fonic’s working process, helps preserve the magic and joy that Hey Duggee delivers to their pre school audience. Indeed Fonic’s skills and expertise will be put to further use in the future, as they are also delighted to be able to announce their involvement with a brand new spin off project ‘Hey Duggee’s Squirrel Club’ created by studio AKA and the BBC.

While fans eagerly anticipate all the new adventures, series four of Hey Duggee is now on i-player with series five premiering on CBeebies and i-player on the 9th of September.
