Further Beyond
Further Beyond a film that tells the story of 18th Century figure, Ambrose O’Higgins.
Irish artists, Desperate Optimists, Joe Lawlor and Christine Molloy return in 2022 with a timely meditation on being Irish in England with ‘The Future Tense’ a film that follows on, or compliments, their 2016 Documentary Film ‘Further Beyond’ which tells the story of 18th Century figure, Ambrose O’Higgins and his remarkable journey from Ireland to Chile.
‘In different places, different thoughts emerge.’ Molloy and Lawlor have spent three decades in England – raising their now nearly-adult daughter Molly, and putting down creative and personal roots. In The Future Tense, they consider whether it’s now time to make a move back to Ireland, in a thoughtful essay style film full of humour.
They explore their own migration story and those of many before them as well as the story of a radicalised English debutante and ask: ‘does Ireland have an addiction to mass immigration?’ And if so, how has English colonialism shaped that, all the while reflecting on their own shifting feelings about England post-Brexit.
