To Build a Fire

Client | Nexus Studio

An adaptation of one of the classics of American literature, To Build a Fire is a beautiful animated short film directed by Emmy award-nominated filmmaker, Fx Goby. Commissioned by the Boy Scouts of America, the film was created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the author, Jack London’s death. The films tells the story of a trapper and his dog attempting to cross the Canadian Yukon during the harsh conditions of midwinter.

Visually the film uses a stark design with limited colour palette of whites, greys and blues for the background. Unlike the original story, there is no narration or dialogue, instead, detailed natural backgrounds portray the harsh complexity of nature, and the score, composed by Mathieu Alvado and recorded by members the London Symphony Orchestra, emphasises the emotion and drama of the main characters, again contrasting with the character design which remain simple and straightforward.

Fonic provided the full sound design and mix. Goby explained in an interview with Animation World Network: I paired up with Fonic studios in London, a remarkable sound studio that truly embraced the film in creating a very dense and delicate soundtrack to immerse the viewers fully.
